Fake News Propaganda Against Marc Anthony - 1464 Words
Fake news is a current buzz phrase, a term that is fashionable in popular culture to describe the field of journalism today. Underpinned by negative connotations and widespread misunderstanding of the termââ¬â¢s meaning, the fake news of today is the so-called yellow journalism of yesterday (U.S. Diplomacy, n.d.). Yellow journalism, or a type of reporting that prioritizes sensationalism over facts, has been circulating in one form or another since ancient times: in ancient Rome, Octavion won his famed battle against Marc Anthony using a disinformation campaign that painted his political opponent as ââ¬Å"a degenerate Roman striving to subvert the liberties of the Roman people to subjugate Italy and the west under the rule of an Oriental queenâ⬠â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦According to the lawsuit, Rod Wheeler was a private investigator funded by wealthy Donald Trump supporter Ed Butowsky to investigate Seth Richââ¬â¢s unsolved murder for the Rich family. Not long before Wikileaks released stolen DNC emails, Seth Rich was gunned down in what police believe was a botched robbery. The timing surrounding Richââ¬â¢s death led to conspiracy theorists charging that Richââ¬â¢s involvement in the Wikileaks email leak ultimately led to his untimely death (Bump, 2017). The fake news lawsuit accuses Fox News of running with an unsubstantiated story that attributes quotes to Rod Wheeler that he claims were fabricated: ââ¬Å"My investigation up to this point shows there was some degree of email exchange between Seth Rich and WikiLeaks, Wheeler supposedly told a Fox News reporter (Bump, 2017). He then reportedly went on to say that ââ¬Å"someone within the D.C. government, Democratic National Committee or Clinton team is blocking the murder investigation from going forwardâ⬠(Bump, 2017). Rod Wheeler vehemently denies making these statements and demanded their removal from the story Fox News planned to run. The Fox reporter in question allegedly agreed to remove the false quotes but then later left them in the story at the demand of her superiors (Bump, 2017).
